In The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Enfield's story would be described by which literary term?

Since Enfield's tale in Chapter 1 of Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde tells of events out of chronological order, things that happened in the past, it is a literary device that is an optional (used by authorial choice) literary technique called a flashback. A flashback reverts the chronology of time in the narrative to a previous event.

This flashback as written by Stevenson is a little unusual in that it is part of a dialogue between characters interacting in actual chronological time within the text, as opposed to a narrator's rendering of a previous event. Joesph Conrad uses this same approach for the narrator listening to Marlowe's protracted narration of past events in an extended flashback in Heart of Darkness. After the flashback tale, Mr. Utterson resumes progressing forward in actual chronological time as it is developed within the context of the story.
