This is a huge problem, and is in the news frequently. When antibiotics are used, they kill off *most* of a population of bacteria, and the patient recovers. But there are a few bacteria that are genetically different, and that are not killed. These bacteria then multiply, and they pass their resistance on to the next generations of bacteria because the resistance is encoded in the genes. We are finding more and more strains of bacteria that are very difficult to kill, because they are resistant to antibiotics that used to be effective. Scientists are working to develop more antibiotics, but it can be slow going.
