On entering a home, the visitor is offered water with which to wash their hands. Cleanliness, especially before eating, was important. Hospitality was also important in providing water for the visitor to wash with. On the Sabbath, no work was permitted to be done. All food had to be prepared the day before and be eaten cold on the Sabbath. Water had to be brought in and firewood as well to ensure that no work was done. Women were to keep their hair covered when in public. At the temple, men and women were to worship separately. Boys could be educated, but not girls. Girls were taught only the way to run a household, raise children, maintain the Sabbath and obey their husbands.
