Explain how Dexter's life is affected by his knowing Judy Jones.

Judy Jones represents that unattainable ideal to which Dexter seeks to obtain.  The beginning of Fitzgerald's short story helps to establish this notion of wealth and privilege that Judy Jones embodies.  To the poor caddy Dexter, this becomes something of which he seeks to become a part.  Additionally, Dexter seeks to possess  both Judy Jones and the life she leads, the trappings within it, as well as the tenets of wealth and privilege.  Judy Jones helps to inspire Dexter's imagination in believing that the life that she represents is one of fulfilment and contentment.  In such a setting, Fitzgerald helps to illuminate the central idea of the Jazz Age and the 1920s, which is namely that all which glitters might not be gold.
